ReportsAFSA 3 Year Strategic Plan 2020-23The plan has been developed to reflect the views of our membership and our wider stakeholder base. The priorities agreed encompass the inputs of those stakeholders and are now brought together as a coherent and ambitious plan for the AFSA and the fire service. The AFSA is hugely dependent on a wide range of people and organisations to fulfil our mandate and these relationships will also be key in our ability to grow and support fire and rescue service over the next three years. Our volunteer staff, along with partners such as the Home Office, NFCC, FBU, Women in the fire service, local and national government, are all critical to the delivery of the objectives in this strategic plan. This strategic plan provides a route forward, but it is vital that we work hard in the next three years to ensure we build on a track record of developmental achievements to act as a springboard for the AFSA and the fire service well into the future.

ResearchSmoke & Mirrors ReportThis report undertaken with the support of the Fire Service Research Training Trust is, in part, a response to the challenge laid down by the then Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP, as the Home Secretary in May 2016, and the Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service at the time, Rt Hon. Brandon Lewis MP in November 2016, to the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) on the diversity of the national workforce profile. The report secondly considerers the 1999, A Thematic Review by HM Fire Service Inspectorate titled ÔEquality and Fairness in the Fire ServiceÕ which contained a recommendation to carry out a future thematic review in 2003, which was never undertaken. This report was commissioned by AFSA in order to address the issues that emerged from the Thematic Review in 1999. This report was written primarily as an analysis of the FRS in England but, where appropriate, considers Wales and Scotland to give a broader context.
